Connecticut Primary Season Information

While Connecticut’s primary season gets less press than, well, most other states, it is still important for voters within the state to have as much information as possible. Taken right from the Hartford Courant, here are all of the important dates for voters within the Nutmeg State.
Source.

I have bolded the critical dates. Also remember that people who will be 18 before election day in November are able to vote in primaries, thanks to a state constitutional amendment passed in 2008.

  • Jan. 24: Deadline to transfer enrollment from one party to the other for voting in primary.
  • Feb. 10: Secretary of the state announces candidates she has placed on ballot. Petitions become available for other candidates.
  • March 2: Deadline for filing primary petition with town registrars of voters.
  • March 6: Deadline for registrars to forward verified petitions to secretary of the state.
  • March 19: Deadline for non-petitioning candidates to withdraw.

If primary has more than one candidate:

  • March 10: Absentee ballots for military and overseas voters become available (45 day ballot).
  • March 20: Secretary of the state determines ballot order by lot in public ceremony.
  • April 3: Absentee ballots become available.
  • April 10: Deadline for state party chairmen to certify the number of national convention delegates from Connecticut; mandatory enrollment session for primary — all towns.
  • April 19: Deadline for mail-in applications for new voters (postmarked, or received by registrar) and unaffiliated voters (received by registrar) to enroll in a party for voting in its primary.
  • April 23: Noon deadline for in-person enrollment, for new voters and unaffiliated voters enrolling in a party in person at Town Hall, for voting in primary.
  • April 24: Polls open 6 a.m. to 8 p.m.
