Political red herrings and GPA redistribution

Every now and then, a Republican friend of mine will post some ridiculous shit on Facebook, prompting me to debate whether I should respond to it. I decided against it for the following video, but it did raise an excellent point about political analogies:

I was going to write a gigantic rebuttal, but YouTube useroriginalindigodingo already posted a pretty good one:

Clearly the student distributing the form needs those extra GPA points, as this is the fucking dumbest thing I’ve ever seen in my life […]

When the university system is set up so that those without GPA points are at a gigantic disadvantage to those who already have them, and that those with GPA points are able to exploit those without to get better marks, you may have something close to a point. Til then, this is simplistic, out of context, misleading and all around the product of an inferior mind.

All too often, I will receive a chain email or an irate conservative will set up a totally ridiculous premise (such as redistributing GPA points), link it to a progressive policy (such as redistributing wealth), and then make progressives seem foolish. Unfortunately, the real fools are those who cannot rationally discuss relevant, yet complex issues, so they instead resort to irrelevant analogies.
