Family Institute of Connecticut outlines disgusting 2012 agenda

When the Family Institute of Connecticut takes a break from making bathroom jokes or mocking dead transgender people, one can find them causing all sorts of unnecessary hoopla. They released a rough outline of their 2012 agenda to their email supporters yesterday and, it basically keeps of their age-old tradition of making socially progressive legislation sound over 9,000 times worse than it actually is. More below the jump.

Starting off:

Pass an opt-in law protecting the innocence of our children. Now that same-sex “marriage” has been undemocratically imposed on Connecticut, we see incidents like what happened in Hartford Public High School: forced pro-gay indoctrination on students by school officials who deliberately choose not to notify parents so they can opt out their children. We must pass a law giving parents a proactive opt-in right requiring schools to notify parents when instruction on marriage or human sexuality will occur so parents can remove their children from harmful “alternative lifestyle” curricula that attacks their beliefs. In 2009 we passed a law exempting religious organizations from same-sex “marriage”—an important first step in the long road back to restoring traditional marriage in Connecticut. Passing the opt-in law is the second step.

I italicized that one sentence for emphasis. It’s interesting that the focus of the paragraph turns from “protecting the innocence of our children” into a political step to reverse the historic legalization of same-sex marriage in Connecticut. Of course, admiring art with gay characters or even learning about same-sex intercourse in health class* isn’t “forced pro-gay indoctrination,” it’s a balanced curriculum. If anything, students with parents who haven’t taught them about LGBTQ people or issues are the ones who would benefit most from a balanced curriculum.

Stop the abortion industry from providing sex education in our public schools. FIC Action defeated Planned Parenthood’s sex-ed bill for three years ina row and we will fight to do it again. The state’s largest abortion provider should have no involvement in the sexual education of Connecticut’s children. Watch for further information on what you can do to keep the abortion industry out of our public schools and away from our children.

The real issue here is not that Planned Parenthood would be talking about abortion in any way, shape, or form – that’s unlikely, even if doing so would be a good thing. What the FIC is afraid of is that Planned Parenthood will accurately teach students about safe sex, without any religious indoctrination. The FIC thinks that children should be taught that sex is dirty and immoral and that they should never do it. Teaching kids that abstinence is the only righteous path? That doesn’t fly with Planned Parenthood.

Pass a bill requiring parental notification for when a young minor has an abortion. Connecticut is one of only a handful of states that does not require an underage girl to at least notify her parents or a legal guardian before obtaining an abortion. These laws are known to reduce the abortion rate. FIC Action brought about a public hearing on teen health last year that focused primarily on parental notification in Connecticut. We will build on this accomplishment to pass a parental notification law.

Once again, I italicized that one sentence for emphasis. The FIC is not looking out for the well-being of our children; it is using them as political tools to end the right to abortion. Of course, obtaining an abortion is not only safer for the woman, but most minors who receive abortions do talk to their parents. These laws are not to protect children’s safety, they are, as the FIC openly admits, to limit access to abortion.

Repeal “transgender” special rights. ”Transgender” activists passed a law preventing boards of education from disciplining or declining to hire teachers who are cross-dressers or who have had sex-change operations…and allowing men into women’s bathrooms. FIC Action will continue to make it a priority to reverse this assault on basic common sense.

The law passed last year would indeed ban schools from engaging in discriminatory practices against gender non-conforming citizens. The bill would allow people who identify as female (who may have been born as a biological male) to use women’s bathrooms. These individuals are still held to the same sexual harassment and assault laws that everyone is, though. The FIC could just as easily have said, “transgender people are scary, give us your money.”

An altogether disappointing, yet not surprising agenda from the Family Institute of Connecticut. Of course, instead of advocating on things that families actually need–jobs, for instance–they feel the need to make fake issues with common-sense social progress. Absolutely shameful.
