I’m Turning Into a Criminal

Hello World!

I now have to think about what mischief I have been up to since my last blog, it’s been way too long. As I think about my life here in San Francisco, I’m realizing I am walking the thin line of freedom and getting arrested. My crimes:

Firstly, you all have to realize San Francisco prides itself on being very green. There are tons of farmer’s markets and food places that boast of raising food locally and pride themselves on being very emotionally friendly. In general it seems that everyone is very conscious of all life and making sure the world remains the amazing place that it has always been. So, having been raised in a similar manner, I apply my life value of recycling and try to limit my waste as much as possible. When i moved into my apartment i saw a bucket for compost on my counter, and thought to myself compost? That is weird what do they do with compost, garden (which seems unfeasible on the third store of an apartment complex?)

Now, I realize you all are not aware of my relationship with compost. Growing up my mom was big into gardening, both flowers and food, and kept a little compost patch next to our garden. My sister and I would fight over who would have the dreaded task of walking the compost bucket across the yard to the patch. Compost, while extremely beneficial and world friendly, is DISGUSTING. It is nothing more than grossly pungent decomposing food, I don’t care how nitrogen rich it is. This makes it understandable why “take out the compost” was always a dreaded chore. So after not composting here because of a lack of garden, I find out from my cousin THAT SAN FRANCISCO HAS A LAW REQUIRING PEOPLE TO COMPOST!!! Who would’ve thought?? They have green dumpsters that are distributed all across the city where you are supposed to dump your compost…Conn would be so proud.

My second offense is actually quite humorous. As of now I am subletting from a friend’s boyfriend in Inner Sunset. The apartment is great, two bedrooms, two bathrooms, a huge kitchen, living/dining room, and a balcony, all to myself. I also am paying less because I told the owner I couldn’t pay the full rent and he didn’t have any other options…Here is the catch….I’m not ACTUALLY allowed to be subletting (which brings forth the fear of getting locked out)…also the building manager lives two doors down from me. I was instructed to tell him if we met that I was a friend who was just watering the plants, and am NOT paying any sort of rent. Anyway I received a notice on my door instructing me that people would be coming to the apartment to paint the door/balcony. So on that day I made sure to leave the apartment and be gone all day. Unfortunately they didn’t come that day and the next day i woke up at like 11 to someone knocking on my door. My window is right outside the door and i heard the manager talking to the workers and they decided they would come back later. I wasn’t ready for the day so I locked my bedroom door and decided I would wait it out. So being locked in my room (besides one quick breakout to grab some Special K) i whipped out the headphones and laptop and immersed my self with a True Blood marathon. At around 3 or 4, I had to do some stuff before leaving for work nobody had come, but I had to leave so I tentatively left my room. After tiptoeing around i noticed that my balcony and door had been painted! Somehow they managed to do the entire job without even alerting me to the fact, and who knows how long I had been unnecessarily holed up in my room.

My final offense is not as cool, but still an offense. Living somewhat outside of downtown where the theater is, I often have to commute using the MUNI (train/subway thing). From my end to downtown, the train is above ground therefore i can get onto the back without paying….at first i was scared to do this but after realizing everyone else is doing it (yeah yeah if everyone was jumping off a bridge would I? if it saved me two dollars the answer would be yes). So yes i run the risk of the fine, but I do have to pay going the other directing because it is underground and there is no way to not pay….so I guess it evens out?

Now I know, you are probably thinking I don’t know how he is behind bars yet, but I admit I started composting as soon as I learned that law because it is wonderful. I move out of my apartment in July and in with my cousin, therefore will not be illegally sleeping in my apartment. As for the MUNI…ehh there are more important things in life.

Otherwise life in San Fran has proven to be wonderful. I can feel myself becoming a better improvisor from taking three hour class twice a week, and am loving sitting in on the company’s rehearsal more and more. I can’t wait until the show opens July 8th when everything comes together and they are performing at their best. I went to a movie called “I Killed My Mother,” which was part of the LGBTQ film festival that Conn’s own Jenny Weinstein is interning at. It was a really hilarious and touching film, plus it was French which always adds a very chic touch. So far the bars/club scene are really great (one club’s bouncer let me in for free….I must’ve been extra sexy) and have resulted in some note worthy nights. The Berkeley girls and I went to a carnival/fair type thing near the Giants stadium last weekend, which was exactly how a fair always is: petting zoo, greasy funnel cakes, and life-threatening creaky rides. This weekend is Pride…I think that speaks for itself, but now i have the pressure of finding a wonderfully fabulous and appropriate outfit for the weekend. I know it is going to be insanely fun and crazy.

Until next time,
Mikey
