On April 13, the Student Government Association announced the results for their executive board election. The Student Government Association works to preserve unity on campus between the faculty, the administration, and the Connecticut College Student body. At each election, 20% of fully matriculated students must vote for it to be a valid election. This does not include students currently abroad. In this election, 445 students voted, an increase of 36 students from the previous year. However, this is still a major decrease from the 2020-2021 election where 771 students voted. “I wish we could get more people to vote in the SGA Executive Board elections. Although we usually meet quorum pretty quickly during the first day of voting, I want more students to be invested in who is representing them to other parts of the college for the next academic year. But overall, elections were pretty smooth this year,” said outgoing SGA President Samirah Jaigardar ՚22.
The 2022-2023 SGA executive board will be made up of:
President: Hannah Gonzalez ՚23
Vice-President: Amaya Fokuo ՚24
Chief of Finance: Maddie Vanech ՚23
Chief of Communications: Sukrit Narang ՚23
Chair of Academic Affairs: Austin Robertson ՚23
Chair of Equity & Inclusion: Sabrina Akbar ՚23
Chair of Honor Council: Ben Jorgensen-Duffy ՚23
Chair of Residential Affairs: Shamar Rule ՚24
Chair of Sustainability: Liam Rimas ՚23
The new executive board is looking forward to beginning their work. “As shared governance continues to face its challenges on campus, it’s important for students to understand how essential SGA is in ensuring that student concerns are heard at the highest levels of office at our college. Going into our next academic year, I want students to be involved with the governance process at Conn by staying attuned to the conversations SGA has every week about the state of student and campus affairs. SGA should be a platform for all student voices to be heard, and I՚m hoping SGA՚s newest Executive Board will be able to accurately represent the student body in our work with staff, faculty, and administration. Our Student Government Oath calls the SGA Executive Board and Assembly to make our Alma Mater greater, worthier, and more beautiful in all the work that we do. I take that sentiment as a challenge to always advocate for better College policies and practice, and I hope to answer that call with the support and direction of the entire student body,” stated incoming SGA Hannah Gonzalez ՚23.
