Letter from the Editors – Spring Edition 4

Spring is finally here, camels! Over the past week, campus has begun to spring back to life as the warm weather coaxes students outside, and the Connecticut College campus becomes a whirlwind of academic projects, artistic performances/displays, spring sports finals, symposiums, awards, housing lotteries, class registration, and so much more.

This edition’s News section highlights the recent Cummings situation, where the senior studio layout over winter break was reconfigured following guidance from the New London Fire Marshal. Arts Editor Elaine Sandoval Carrasco shares opinions from both staff and students regarding the reconfiguration of senior studio space. Sandoval Carrasco also covers Muhammad Abdullah ’28, who was awarded the DAAD RISE Research Internship in Germany. This fellowship allows Abdullah to conduct research in computer science at the University Hospital Augsburg’s Institute for Digital Medicine.

In opinions, Abby Williams ‘27 vividly describes her experience studying abroad in Ghana over Spring Break, describing the trip as a life changing and inspiring experience in a welcoming, rich, and historical locale. Williams implores all to travel to Africa, and recommends the experience to those looking for a shorter study abroad trip.

From poems to the Ammerman symposium, TCV Arts writers explore topics surrounding the multi-modality creativity happening all around campus. Arts section editor Nikeya Tankard spotlights the lens-based talents of both renowned photographer Dorothea Lange, and of Artist of the Edition Nic Sanfilippo ‘27, writing two respective features on the significance of Lange’s mid-20th century historical photographs as well as on Sanfilippo’s career journey towards queer film. Additionally, contributor Avery Selber ‘29 composes a list of the indie music contributions of the Elephant 6 Recording Company, while contributor Michael Creutz ‘26 shares his creativity with the campus community through a poem entitled “god Stares at White Trees.”

Turning to sports, staff writer Evan Young ‘26 returns with a globally-centered piece on the All-American sport of baseball, laying out the “rollercoaster” ups and downs of the 2026 World Baseball Classic in a clear, easy to follow style sure to captivate even the most novice baseball fan. Selber pens a mock NFL draft on which players might be considered amongst the top 32 in the NFL in the upcoming roster selection, bringing TCV into the mock draft fun. Staff writer Rowan Karaca ‘29 calls attention to the incredible season of the Connecticut College men’s swim and dive team—the team managed to pull off a nearly undefeated season, earning a NCAA DIII national ranking of 18th in addition to a fourth place finish in the NESCAC conference. In the recurring Camel of the Edition column, swimmer Evan Lyons ‘27 is highlighted for placing fifth in the 1,650 freestyle and earning First Team All-American Honors at the NCAA DIII Men’s Swimming National Championships.

In Entertainment, Cruciverbalist Sarah Ludwigson and contributor Serena Richmond ‘27 provide a challenging crossword puzzle, and a mini crossword for those seeking a smaller challenge.

As always, we are always looking for new contributors, writers, and layout editors, so if you would like to get involved please reach out to us at thecollegevoice@conncoll.edu! We plan to open up staff applications for the ‘26-’27 academic year within the next couple of weeks.

Happy reading,
