September 24 Meeting
SHS Updates
Dean Cardwell held an open forum to address updates to Student Health Services (SHS).
SHS is considering several options for how to confront the rising costs of campus healthcare. A committee has been formed to determine next steps. They will recommend to the Cabinet a model that aims to balance student needs and the financial needs of the College. Dean Cardwell said these conversations are happening on campuses across the country as costs rise and student healthcare needs become more complex.
There will be no changes to counseling services, Dean Cardwell said.
Diversity and Inclusion
The Indigenous Peoples Initiative has been discussing how to preserve the native burial ground on campus, located on Dawley Field by the Thames River. They are trying to find ways to educate the campus and community on this topic and continue to have conversations with local tribes. Ideas included providing a general history of the land the College occupies, hosting a series of talks, and developing creative projects that would partner with Sprout Garden, LVU, and MECHA.
October 1 Meeting
Admission Retention
The topic of admission retention was discussed. An outside firm is being hired to understand what the public thinks of Connecticut College and to gather other marketing and admission information through market research. There is talk about hosting earlier admission events, ie., holding Camel Days earlier in the year, potentially in late February.
Indigenous Programming
There are plans to implement waterfront signage to educate about the Native American burial ground near the waterfront and to increase student awareness of this subject.
SDP Consultants
The discussion continued on the topic of implementing Social Difference and Power (SDP) consultants to ease the work of faculty members trying to get their courses to count as an SDP. This is the work of the Academic and Administrative Procedures Committee (AAPC).
