U.S. Navy Employee Arrested at Cro Dance, Charged with Sexual Assault

Early Sunday morning, New London police responded to campus following the detainment of a trespasser caught sexually assaulting multiple female students during a Cro dance. Campus Safety received verbal reports of a young man later identified by New London police as Julian Quintero, age 21, of Groton with affiliations to the US Navy. Witnesses report seeing Campus Safety request ID from Quintero on the Cro patio. Failing to provide any identification, he and Campus Safety officers proceeded to the library green where Quintero tried to escape.

Several Campus Safety officers responded in force, pursuing and tackling Quintero. Present Coast Guard Police determined that Quintero was not a cadet at CGA, despite his false claims. Shortly after, several New London police officers arrested Quintero who was later charged with second-degree breech of peace and fourth-degree sexual assault with a $1,500 non-surety bond, according to both the New London Day and New London Patch.

Multiple students gave statements to Campus Safety officers and the New London police.

One of the victims said, “This probably happens at Cro dances all the time and people don’t think it’s a big deal, but it feels like a violation of personal space when it’s unwanted and unwarranted. Campus Safety responded swiftly and effectively to the reports.”

Another student who witnessed the event echoed these sentiments. “I was impressed by the quick and tactical Campus Safety response. They did not brush off students’ claims of assault but took the matter seriously. In my time here I’ve never seen a situation like this on campus, and knew immediately that the suspect did not belong to this community.”
