Connecticut College Men’s Soccer (9-2-6): 3-1 win vs. #3 Middlebury College

Following a third title game appearance in four years, the Connecticut College Men’s Soccer Team won the NESCAC Men’s Soccer Championship for the first time in program history after a 3-1 win against previously undefeated #3 nationally ranked Middlebury College. To get to the final, the sixth seeded Camels had to defeat the defending NESCAC champion #8 nationally ranked Amherst College in the first round of the NESCAC playoffs on Nov. 2, and #20 ranked Williams College in the semifinals on Nov. 9. Following a 1-1 draw in regular time courtesy of a goal from forward Matt Quiros-Newton ‘26 assisted by Charlie Miles ‘27, the Camels defeated Amherst in penalty kicks 4-2 following two crucial saves from goalkeeper Peter Silvester ‘25. For his role in the win, Silvester was honored as NESCAC Player of the Week. Against Williams, the Camels never trailed, taking control with a volleyed goal from forward Jake Creus ‘25 from a cross from Alessandro Horvath Diano ‘25, two minutes prior to the end of the first period. The lead was doubled 69 minutes in courtesy of a goal from leading goalscorer Matt Scoffone ‘25, assisted by Marco Perugini ‘27. While Williams scored in with six minutes left in regulation, it was too little too late as the Camels held on.
A day later, the Camels faced Middlebury, who were hosting the championships, having earned the best regular season record in the conference. The Camels struck first with a goal from Perugini who slotted the ball home from the top of the 18 yard box a little over 21 minutes in. However, Middlebury equalized just over 5 minutes later from a corner kick with Ari Klayman, directing a header from Colin Dugan’s cross into the back of the net. For the remainder of the half, Middlebury continued to give the Camel defense all they could handle, forcing two saves from Silvester and hitting the crossbar. The Camels took the lead in the second half following a second ball in from defender Sam Boehm ‘24, who found the head of forward Gavin Vanden Berg ‘26 for a near post header. Middlebury continued to press on for an equalizer with their golden opportunity coming 76 minutes in. Off a corner kick, Middlebury’s Hugo Horwitz forced a save from Silvester who directly palmed the ball into the path of Dugan, who skied his rebound effort on the open goal above the crossboard. The Camels ended all hopes of a Middlebury comeback moments later. Boehm forced a turnover in the midfield right into the path of forward Elliot Spatz ‘26, who dribbled past two defenders to slot home the Camels third goal from the top of the 18 yard box. The Camels held on for the remaining 14 minutes as the game finished 3-1. With the win, the Camels clinched an automatic bid as NESCAC Conference Champions to the NCAA DIII Men’s Soccer Championship and moved to 10-2-6 on the season. The Camels will await their opponent which will have been announced on Monday, Nov. 11.
