University of Connecticut Women’s Basketball (37-3): 82-59 Win Vs. University of South Carolina – NCAA DI Women’s Basketball Tournament

  • April 6, 2025
  • Tampa, FL

The Mecca of Women’s basketball, that is the UConn Huskies’ stadium, has another banner to fly after demolishing the University of South Carolina 82-59 in the DI women’s basketball championship match. The #2 Huskies in the Spokane side of the bracket went 31-3 through the regular season with an incredibly balanced unit with a top-10 scoring offense and the #1 scoring defense. Led by the WNBA’s #1 overall draft pick, Paige Bueckers, UConn coasted through each round of the NCAA championship, starting with the 7th largest margin of victory in history with 69 points in their 103-34 point performance over Arkansas State in the first round. The Huskies then followed up that game with a 34-point win over South Dakota State University, a 23-point victory over Oklahoma University, a 14-point win versus USC, and another 34-point win, this time over UCLA, to send them to their record-holding 12th NCAA title victory. The game against South Carolina was led offensively by a three-headed monster of guard Azzi Fudd, freshman forward Sarah Strong, and Bueckers. Fudd and Strong each put up 24 points while Bueckers added on another 17, which combined would have been enough to take down the Gamecocks. However, Strong’s defensive performance piled more onto South Carolina’s plate as she added three blocks and two steals. The entire team’s defensive performance stayed consistent throughout the tournament, as the South Carolina team struggled to get their shots to go, forcing Coach Staley to rotate players to find which five would be most effective at breaking through the UConn wall. Outside of the first few minutes of the first quarter, the Huskies dominated the entire matchup, sending the Gamecocks back to South Carolina without a real chance to get their footing in the match. UConn is back atop the college basketball podium and, with its legacy and young talent left on the roster, looks to be a dominant force for years to come.
