Letter from the Editor – Fall 2025 Edition 1

Despite the persisting humidity, it feels that fall is once again in the air. Leaves on the sugar maple and oak trees across campus are slowly changing as students walk across the revitalized Cro promenade.

Much construction has been completed this past summer and much more construction continues to be completed. First-time contributor Rowan Karaca ‘29 provides a review on the meal options catered out of the freshly remodeled Oasis. While some construction has been met with positive feedback, other projects have offered trouble and inconvenience for many students. Arts Editor Elaine Sandoval Carrasco highlights many of the struggles disabled students have had getting around ongoing construction which leaves the campus failing to meet ADA standards for accessibility. Continuing from last year’s SGA Column, News Editor Theo Andres highlights the first SGA meeting of the semester while contributor Grace Schmidt profiles Scooby, the Office of Admissions new dog in a merged campus happenings article.

Andres also provides an account of protests against Trump in New London at the Coast Guard Academy’s graduation in May. In Opinions, Andres provides their opinion on if the environmental damages AI data centers bring are worth the technological benefits. Opinions Editor Claire Hloytak provides an account on her experience rewatching Hamilton on its 10 year anniversary and how her experiences have changed each time she has rewatched it.

For new first-years interested in being successful and making the most of your college experience, Director of Institutional Research and Planning John Nugent and Associate Director of Institutional Research and Planning Sanjeewa Karunaratne provide a first year guide to success from the Class of 2025 based on results of last spring’s Senior Survey.

The start of the semester has provided plenty of athletic action already and this is reflected in this edition’s jam-packed sports section. For those curious on how the College’s sports teams stack up, Sports Editor Luke Corless provides a detailed preview of each sports team in the Fall Sports Preview. Two teams are highlighted in particular due to important changes. For the first time in more than 28 years, the College’s varsity sailing team will not be coached by Coach Jeff Bresnahan as he takes a medical leave this year. Contributor Finley Regan ‘27 provides interviews with incoming visiting head coach Harris Padegs ‘23 and assistant coach Charlie Anderson. Managing Editor Lilla Kate Tucker highlights the men’s water polo team’s decision to move down from DI Northeast Water Polo Conference (NWPC) conference to the fully DIII Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) conference. Many of the College’s varsity athletes continue competing in their sport at a high level during the summer. Sports Editor Ellis Iurilli-Hough interviewed one such athlete, Liam Horkan ‘26, of the men’s lacrosse team. Horkan played for Team Ireland in the European Men’s Lacrosse Championship in Wrocław, Poland as the team finished fourth. To round out the Sports section, Contributor Evan Young covered the 2025 Little League World Series, which was won by Taiwan.

In Entertainment, Cruciverbalist Erica Smith provides many puzzles and games bound to keep you entertained.

Speaking of our next edition, we are always looking for new contributors, writers, and layout editors, so if you would like to get involved please reach out to us at thecollegevoice@conncoll.edu!
