- SGA did not meet on October 2, so I have no news to bring you from then!
- The SGA Executive Board presented a resolution on making changes to the bylaws, mostly minor changes and wording. Proposed changes included: clarifying the language around the role of Presidential Associate; changing the process of appointing an assistant for the Chair of Academic Affairs so that it matches that of the other chairs; shifting the frequency of how often SAB chairs meet with the Chair of Academic Affairs to be at the discretion of the Chair, and how the Advisory Board functions/votes; updating the descriptions of committees; and introducing clauses for conflicts of interest when voting on providing funding in both the DEI and Finance committees.
- We passed the resolution from Sustainability on making straws accessible on campus for students who need them.
- We passed the resolution on Universal Accessible Design, which provides and reinforces guidelines for how to make clubs and their flyers accessible, and discussed implementation moving forward, including how to best inform clubs about these guidelines and accessibility during club leadership training, and about who will enforce the guidelines moving forward, though Chair of Equity and Inclusion Aleks Eikinas will do so in the interim. Relatedly, a request for a list of accessible spaces for meetings was made last week, and an infographic for what makes a space accessible is being developed now.
- Dining workers at Harris and JA have been reporting that students have been particularly messy and disrespectful to staff recently—please take care of the people who take care of us, and clean up after yourselves.
- Reiterating from last week, the heat in dorms will not turn on until two weeks of cold weather, defined as roughly below 60 degrees, has passed. Reslife has no control over this, unfortunately, but please make sure your heat is working once it turns on, and if not, get it fixed as soon as possible.
- Everyone received an email with the link to a survey on the Housing Lottery, please fill it out as soon as possible with your thoughts.
- A suggestion was made that the Calendar Committee, once it starts meeting, should discuss having Indigenous People’s Day as a day off at Conn, as it is at some other universities, out of respect for the holiday.
- The Finance Committee met and passed funding for Model United Nations, Muslim Students Association, and People of Color Association requests.
- The DEI Committee met, and discussed what projects to move forward with for this year. They also approved Identity-Based Funding for MSA. If you’d like to join the committee, please contact Chair of EI, Aleks Eikinas.
- The Chair of Academic Affairs, Nic Sanfilippo, met with Student Advisory Board (SAB) chairs, and discussed how to move forward with those meetings. A request was made that SABs have fundraising accounts, as not all departments can monetarily support SAB events.
- Sustainability asks that we please stop trying to recycle vapes. This is extremely dangerous, and can easily start fires and explosions. All vapes, and all things with batteries in general, should be recycled in the E-Waste bins in Cro and Cummings.
- The Ad Hoc Committee on Student Representation Reformation has begun meeting, and is soliciting proposals for new student representation models from General Assembly members. However, if you have a proposal or any ideas about how to rework the SGA representation system, please contact Theo Andres (myself), or Maddie McDaniel, SGA Parliamentarian.
- Student Activities Council (SAC) has big plans for the week of Halloween: a Hollywood murder mystery party, psychic readings, bedazzling rubber ducks, trunk or treat (see more information below), a Mystic walking ghost tour, and a scary movie night on Halloween. Keep an eye on SAC pages for more information.
- Trunk or Treat is open for clubs or sports to sign up for, to get volunteer hours, and to just have fun dressing up and giving candy to faculty and staff’s children. Keep an eye on the final deadline to sign up, October 18.
- In other Halloween event news, MOBROC will be hosting a Halloween show on Thursday, Oct. 30, and Rocky Horror will be on Halloween night in Evans Hall. Look out for more info.
- The deadline to fill out the interest form for the fall semester BIPOC Unity Market is October 26, and the date for Unity Market this semester is November 6. You can find the link for the form on the Race and Ethnicity Programs Instagram.
