Letter from the Editors

You’ve almost made it, Camels! As students trudge back to campus for one final push following Thanksgiving Break, we at “The College Voice” are pleased to share our last edition of the Fall 2025 semester. From renovation of campus buildings to increased usage of AI to the end of the Lyft pass program to discussion surrounding changes in campus living, this semester has been marked by a multitude of changes at an institutional level. National shifts in federal research funding have remained at the forefront of conversation surrounding funding for higher education, a dialogue led in part by our very own President Chapdelaine. We’ve chosen to reprint the President’s recent article (first published in “Inside Higher Ed”) in hopes of sharing her institutional values with the wider student body.

In News, News Editor Theo Andres covers SGA’s recent open forum which primarily sought to find solutions to rework the current house senator system. As always, the SGA Columns provide information on student government meetings which have occurred and the News Shorts article offers information on news pitches and happenings our staff was unable to cover.

This edition’s opinions section addresses topics ranging from laundry to the recent New York City mayoral election. Contributor Eben Golan’29 compares Mamdani’s decisive victory to John Steinbeck’s book “In Dubious Battle,” while Staff Writer Madeline Motes ‘27 expresses frustration with lack of consideration surrounding laundry facilities. Opinions Editor Mia Whipple responds to a recent New York Times article originally entitled “Did Women Ruin the Workplace?,” and Opinions Section editor Claire Hlotyak promotes New London Public School’s relationship with high-quality food service provider Brigaid. President Andrea Chapdelaine’s op-ed arguing of the importance of federal research funding provided to small colleges such as Connecticut College previously published online in Inside Higher Ed is re-published in this edition.

Moving to Arts, Arts Editor Nikeya Tankard features Art and Neuroscience major AJ Escalante ‘27 as the Artist of the Edition, providing readers with a window into Escalante’s artistic background. Arts Editor Elaine Sandoval-Carrasco interviews Julia Toyer ‘27 on this year’s packed production of The Rocky Horror Picture Show. Columnist Kendall Ziady returns with a fourth edition of the Pop Culture Column, touching on topics such as “Wicked: For Good,” Disney live action films in the works, and Dancing with the Stars.

In Sports, Managing Editor Lilla Kate Tucker covers the varsity men’s soccer team’s season which saw them make it to the finals of the NESCAC Championship and the Sweet Sixteen of the NCAA DIII National Championship. Co-Editor in Chief Kevin Lieue profiles two members of the men’s soccer team, NESCAC Defensive Player of the Year Max Haberman ‘27 and captain Sam Brockelman ‘26, in the recurring Camel of the Edition column. Sports Editor Ellis Iurilli-Hough ‘27 covers men’s soccer player Matty Vogel ‘29, who has raised over $36,000 to fund cancer research for the 2026 Dana-Farber Marathon Challenge, where Vogel will run the Boston Marathon to fundraise. Sports Editor Luke Corless offers a recap of the recently finished fall sports in the Fall Sports Recap. Staff Writer Evan Young writes about many of the recent offseason deals completed by MLB teams. Staff Writer Rowan Karaca highlights F1’s recent Sao Paulo Grand Prix. Contributor Eben Gollen ‘29 takes us back to 1947 to profile the New London Raiders, a minor league baseball team which played in 1947 in New London. Gollen ties the failed economic viability of the team to the tumultuous economic situation of New London during the 1940s.

In entertainment, Cruciverbalist Erica Smith shares yet another crossword students are sure to enjoy puzzling out. Hint: answers range from holidays to sports to pop culture!

This edition marks the last edition we will publish this semester prior to winter break. On behalf of The College Voice’s editorial board, we would like to wish everyone a strong end to the semester and a restful and happy winter break spent with family, friends, and loved ones.

Several members of our editorial board will be going abroad next semester and we will have openings in News, Opinions, and Sports section editor positions, Social Media Editor, and the Cruciverbalist position. Additionally, we are always looking for new contributors, writers, and layout editors, so if you are interested in an opening or would like to get involved please reach out to us at thecollegevoice@conncoll.edu!
