SGA Column for 5/3

  • We passed the SPF resolution to fund new materials and tools for Spokespeople, the bike and longboard rental organization under the Office of Sustainability. The organization offers free rental to students, promotes sustainable modes of transportation, and with the funding could also offer maintenance to other students on campus, and upkeep their own bikes.
  • Dean Cardwell hosted an open forum on upcoming changes to the Student Handbook. They have had a committee of students and staff working on the revision, including Honor Council and SGA students, for the year. Revisions they are making this year include: updating the disruption policy to match the freedom of expression policy, which was revised last year; updating the language of the DUI clauses; and adding in a new category of ‘harm to others’ that is constituted of assault, threats, and a new bullying policy. They also made minor revisions to the policies on creating dangerous and/or unhealthy conditions, including reckless actions and fire safety. We also discussed how to move forward on academic dishonesty issues and AI policies, as both becoming growing issues on campus.
  • Both the resolution for a new system, and the DEI Co-Chair resolution, passed the student body vote. Please see our corresponding article for more information. We discussed at General Assembly how to move forward, and planning over the summer to implement some new elections in the fall, as well as how to collaborate with RSOs to discuss how to implement the club representative system.
  • We voted on some of the SGA awards– The Davis Award for Excellence in Teaching went to Professor Virginia Anderson, the Larry Holloway Award went to Director of Media Relations Christina Flowers, and and the Impact in Equity and Inclusion Award went to both Professor Karen Hanna and Professor Sheetal Chhabria.
  • Election results for the 2026-2027 SGA Executive Board are out. Elections for the Chair of Residential Affairs is ongoing, so please make sure you vote in that as well.
