Fans watching the recent FIFA World Cup games across Canada, the U.S., and Mexico may have noticed the addition of mandatory three-minute “hydration breaks” in the middle of each half, in which players take a break to refuel and restrategize regardless of the local temperature. For games with punishing heat and humidity such as the Argentina-Cabo Verde match on July 4th, fans noted the necessity of these breaks for elite athletes to remain at top performance.
However, it wasn’t only Lionel Messi dealing with extreme temperatures that day. The holiday weekend in the U.S. marked part one of a punishing heatwave that has been continuously rocking the Western hemisphere and much of mainland Europe for the past month, while showing no signs of letting up anytime soon. The urban desert and heat dome effects have been exacerbating temperatures in global hotspots like New York, driving “feels-like” temperatures in the city up to 110 degrees Fahrenheit as of late. Across the July 4th weekend, states all across the eastern seaboard experienced blistering temperatures, which were even worse in counterpart midwestern states and the southwestern U.S., where heat in cities like Phoenix, Arizona have made history for consecutive number of 110+ degree days in a row.
Western and central Europe have also been making the news for their half of the global heatwave, having just recorded the hottest June in European history, with temperatures up to 6 degrees Fahrenheit higher than the average for this time of year. The continent is estimated to have risen a full 2 degrees Celsius since 1976, in which a formerly-regarded “worst heatwave ever” has had its record shattered nearly every year since 2020. While France and the Iberian Peninsula are being hit the hardest, central Europe has also been experiencing history-making heat, with all-time national high temperature records being set in Germany, Czechia, Poland, and Hungary within a single 24-hour window on Sunday, June 28th. And while the U.S. and Europe have been experiencing comparable temperatures, Europe’s lack of adequate infrastructure to handle the heat has been exacerbating the impacts of this heatwave, which has turned deadly in some European capitals.
Europe’s antiquated infrastructure has made it so that the majority of homes and businesses are equipped similarly to they were in the 18th and 19th centuries, trapping and conserving heat in homes in areas where temperatures typically only rose for a few weeks in the summer, and not to excess. While beautiful, these stone and brick structures usually make it so that residents rely on keeping the windows closed, rooms dark, and using handheld or ceiling fans to regulate the difference. On the other hand, most residential buildings in the U.S. are newer, specifically equipped with air conditioning units and a complimentary power grid with the bandwidth to handle the weight of hundreds of A.C. units operating simultaneously across a neighborhood. It is estimated that 90% of U.S. homes have air conditioning installed, while in Europe this number falls to 20%, with many being smaller units that put strain on the power grid of any given city when too many residents attempt to purchase or utilize A.C. units at the same time. As a result, citizens of major cities across Western Europe such as Madrid, Bordeaux, and Paris have been living and working for weeks under relentless heat, with little relief in sight.
During the most severe week of the heatwave in northern France, Paris experienced 2,025 excess deaths, a 62% increase in mortality from previous weeks in June. Many of these deaths have tragically occurred in the homes of elderly residents, as persistent heat coupled with an aging population have made the French capital particularly vulnerable to heat stroke and dehydration-related deaths. Officials advise that this is likely an underestimation of the true numbers, as it will take several months after the continuing heatwave to confirm the causes of the fatalities. An estimated 131 additional deaths by drowning have also been recorded in Paris as residents have attempted to jump into bodies of water both unsupervised and unauthorized for swimming, such as the Seine River and Canal Saint-Martin, to cool off.
Wildfires have also raged in drier areas of Europe, exacerbated by the weeks of extreme temperatures. In the Andalucia region of southern Spain, firefighters are still battling one of the deadliest wildfires in Spanish history. Local officials issued evacuation orders for residents as the fires continued to ravage more than 16,000 acres of the Spanish countryside, but over 12 deaths have already been confirmed, alongside dozens more missing. Fires have continued to rage outside of Madrid, Valencia, and eastern Portugal, causing more evacuations. The Pyrenees mountain range area between Spain and France has also caused over 10,000 people to evacuate their homes in the past week, turning the heatwave from an uncomfortable reality to a borderline humanitarian disaster. The heat has been crippling infrastructure across the continent, with energy grids collapsing and asphalt roads and train tracks melting and collapsing due to the pressure of hours of intense heat. For an area that is known for its intricate international railroad system, the realities of this brutal heatwave has been bringing the “Euro summer” dream back down to reality for tourists and permanent residents alike.
These changes are largely due to the rapidly-advancing effects of global warming, exacerbated by decades of burning fossil fuels at unsustainable rates, high-pressure “heat domes” trapping hot air in entire regions for weeks at a time, and the occurrence of El Niño conditions. El Niño, a climate phenomenon in which the warming seas cause changes to trade wind patterns, producing hotter conditions across the globe, typically accompanied by storms and floods. El Niño climate events are typically supposed to occur between every 2 to 7 years, though this frequency has been increasing over the last 10 years with the formerly record-breaking heat in 2024 marking a period known as “super El Niño.” The super El Niño has been worsening weather patterns across the world, and causing events such as the February 2026 blizzards across the U.S. and Canada, flooding and landslides in Brazil, Kenya, and Indonesia, and lowering the predictable warning threshold for typhoons in the Western Pacific. While the 2026 heatwave may be making life uncomfortable across the U.S. and parts of Europe, it is unfortunately only an early indicator of the dangerous climate conditions that will continue to worsen in our rapidly warming world.
